Starting at the 5th we have the big national Koran reading and reciting competition here in Bengkulu. MTQN.

Whilst I thord that a Koran reading competition would be a very pious and serious affair, here the people think of something else.

Around the stadium the opening ceremony took place, there is huge fair and you can buy clothes, sweets and lots of other things. It has more a country fair feeling or for the Freiburg people it feels more then the „Schalten und Walten“ with stands from the local farmers cooperative, and tourist office.

Nama, Nama, siapa?

Personen Namen sind eine ganz besondere Sache in Indonesier. Bei uns ist es ja traditionell so, Mann heiratet Frau, erster Name der Frau bleibt, Name den sie geerbt hat, wird durch Namen des Mannes ersetzt. Dieser steht als letzter. Hier ist das alles ein wenig komplizierter.

My name is Khan – anschauen!

Yesterday evening I was in the cinema here in Bengkulu. Despite the small selection of films that are shown it is a good cinema and you can’t say anything badly about the price, we paied 15000 IDR (about 1,50 EUR) for our film.

We watched „My Name is Khan“. The experience from watching it in a majority muslim country, togehter with some muslim friends has to be much difficult from doing so in Germany. It reflects the fear of many young muslim, who fear they will be discriminated when they trave to the US or any other western country. And it is reminiscent of the fears many western people, who have never met any educated muslim or rather any muslim at all have. Simply because they don’t know about muslim traditions, regligion and their practice.

The movie will be on in Germany from June 10th.

After now living 4 months in Bengkulu City, here in the province of Bengkulu, I would like to give some advise on the restaurants that exist here. This is not a complete guide – just a simple way to give something back to the expat comunity. 🙂

Bali bietet mehr als nur Strand und saufen, auch wenn viele Touristen das nicht merken und das

vielleicht auch schwierig ist, wenn man Indonesisch nicht spricht. Touristisch ist es hier so gut ausgebaut, dass man das Hotel oder das Touristenviertel nicht verlassen muß, indem es wirklich alle Angenhmlichkeiten gibt. KSR, TSR, SATGANA – Abküfi auf Indonesisch…

Auch hier schlägt der Abküfi – Kurz für Ab-Kürz-Fimmel immer mal wieder voll durch. Besonders weil die Indonesier auch gerne so verkürzte zusammegehackstückte Worte bilden, wie Wakpres, heißt ausgeschrieben Wakil President und mein den Vizepresidenten…

Auch das PMI (= Palang Merah Indonesia, Indonesisches Rotes Kreuz) hat diese Fimmel und viele tolle Ausdrücke, ein paar will ich mal erklären:

KSR – Korps Sukarela, der Zusammenschuß aller Freiwilligen im PMI. Da gibt es hier verschiedene Gliederungen: eine für, die die nicht mehr Studieren, diverse an den Unis (z.b. KSR UNIB).
