BIP Bengkulu

„BIP Bengkulu“ weiterlesen

Practical Tips for Bengkulu Tourism

Horizon Hotel

Is the Hotel the Red Cross staff usually stayes when they travel to Bengkulu. It has the best pool in town, which is not only frequented by hotel guests but by the locals as well. Has fairly decent rooms and is not to far away from downtown or the beach.

How to get to Bengkulu?

The easiest and most convenient way is to fly from Jakarta. Actually the only flights are from there, though there was talk of an Bengkulu – Padang Air Link. Mandala, Batavia and Sriwijia fliy once a day, Lion Air twice. The flights are usually around 500.000 IDR. TX Travel on Suprapto can help you with booking and has english speaking staff. „Practical Tips for Bengkulu Tourism“ weiterlesen

Bengkulu Tourism

Repeatedly Friends ask me if there are any tourist attractions in Bengkulu. Well there are not a lot, and certainly we cannot compete with Cities like Bandung or even places like Lombok. But here we go:

Fort Malborough

is one of the surviving structures stemming from the time Bengkulu and all of south Sumatra was in the hands of the British. And during its best times was as large as Fort Georg ein Madras. Recently it has undergone some renovatiosn due to the visit of SBJ (mostly repainted)

MTQN 23 in Bengkulu: National Koran reading competition

Contributions from all of Indonesias 33 Provinces
Contributions from all of Indonesias 33 Provinces

Starting at the 5th we have the big national Koran reading and reciting competition here in Bengkulu. MTQN.

Whilst I thord that a Koran reading competition would be a very pious and serious affair, here the people think of something else.

The big party - opend by the president
The big party - opend by the president

Around the stadium the opening ceremony took place, there is huge fair and you can buy clothes, sweets and lots of other things. It has more a country fair feeling or for the Freiburg people it feels more then the „Schalten und Walten“ with stands from the local farmers cooperative, and tourist office.

My name is Khan – anschauen!

Yesterday evening I was in the cinema here in Bengkulu. Despite the small selection of films that are shown it is a good cinema and you can’t say anything badly about the price, we paied 15000 IDR (about 1,50 EUR) for our film.

We watched „My Name is Khan“. The experience from watching it in a majority muslim country, togehter with some muslim friends has to be much difficult from doing so in Germany. It reflects the fear of many young muslim, who fear they will be discriminated when they trave to the US or any other western country. And it is reminiscent of the fears many western people, who have never met any educated muslim or rather any muslim at all have. Simply because they don’t know about muslim traditions, regligion and their practice.

The movie will be on in Germany from June 10th.

Resto Bengkulu some reviews

After now living 4 months in Bengkulu City, here in the province of Bengkulu, I would like to give some advise on the restaurants that exist here. This is not a complete guide – just a simple way to give something back to the expat comunity. 🙂

Despite the fact, that this city is not so big and has only limited bule influence, there are quite a lot good restos. „Resto Bengkulu some reviews“ weiterlesen

Wasserleichensuche

„Wasserleichensuche“ weiterlesen

Logistics Training

One example of the power point slides / Pemantauan = Monitoring

Actually I don’t want to write so much about the logistics training. Again it was intresting to see how Indonesian Red Cross does things and what they teach. In the meantime I started to have 8 hours of language training each week and this increaesed my ability to speak, so that I can at least understand the people in the office and in the bus. But for more elaboarte language such as sms, facebook comments or more specialised things like a seminar about a particular toppic its still not enough.

send me three more tents please

With the 90 hours that German Red Cross funded we were not able to to any meanigful work and how wonder, just imagine to send someone who learned 90 hours of German to a GRC Branch and expect meaningful work to be done.
