Maus im Stiefel

Im Laufe einer Karriere beim Rettungsdienst passiert ja schon so einiges lustiges und nachdenkliches. Nun auch dieses, fast schon eine Geschichte die zur kommendne Weihnachtszeits passt.

Eines morgens begab sich ein Kollege zu Schichtbeginn beim Umziehen zu seinem Stiefel. Nachdem man Hose und Polohemd angezogen hatte, schlupfte er auch in seinen Stiefel. Doch oh was. Es fühlte sich flauschig und warm an in seinem Stiefel, hatte er etwa seinen Socken vergessen?

Schnell den Fuß heraus und den Stiefel umgedreht. Was war nun drin? Eine kleine graue Maus, die es sich dort bequem gemacht hatte. Schlieslich ist ja so ein Stiefel auch ein warmes und angenehmes Plätzchen. Die Maus fiel aus dem Stieel heraus und sprintete davon.

Fragt sich nur wo die Rettungswachenkatze „Lucy“ eigentlich zu dem Zeitpunkt war…

Islam and Democracy

Last Monday I moderated the session on „Islam and Democracy“ in the course on political theory here at the University of Education. The entire Seminar is lead by Prof. Dr. Burth.

When I posted on Facebook, about the preparations for the session,  some people already were very passionate about the subject. And it let to a pile of angry and controversial comments. Now as we have done the session and had some very interesting discussions in there as well, I feel I should write a little bit about it here as well.

I don’t think I can claim to speak authoritatively on that subject, as I had just a short glimpse into this area of study. However it was very interesting and I would hope that my fellow students here at the Politics and the new Islamic studies department, will think about it further and more thorough then I could.

For the discussion I prepared a paper wit the following points:

  1. Islam is compatible with democracy as much as Catholicism is compatible with democracy. The Koran can be interpreted so that it reads compatible with democracy or being compatible with a religious dictatorship.
  2. Islam does not equal Islam, there are enormous differences in religious practice, socio-economic Conditions, national background and interpretation of the scripture.
  3. Nation is still a valid framework for interpretation
  4. There are enormous differences in between Islamic, islamist or islam-inspired parties across the board
  5. Islamist is a invalid shortening for grouping parties. As Christiandemocract is a shortening when you look at the CDU, CVP or the American Republican Party.
  6. For us as students of politics and teachers we should try to create a „Islamic democracy pedagogy“

As a conclusion what do I think? Yes Islam is compatible with democracy, if you want that, as Catholicism is compatible with democracy. But as Catholicism it can be used as an ideological framework to justify oppression and authoritarianism; Islam can be used. However we here in the west have to invest much more time and efforts in trying to understand it. The issue will stay with us, especially with the Arab Spring.

Books for Christmas

So before the holiday season begins and some of the fellow man do not have had time to go for shopping, because acidently and surprisingly christmas came, here are some book recomendations you might want to give as last minute presents, especially if the reciever of the present has a kindle:

Following the Wrong God Home by Cathrine Lim, She is a Singaporese Author and I’m half through the book by now. Chronicles the life of a young woman in Singapore and negotiates politics, religion and the perils of society. Niece read espiecally if you want somehting from outside the west for christmas.

Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour – An English antropoligst explains the rules and grammer of life in England to us. Finally a book every student of English culture should read and keep in mind. Makes interacting with the Angloes so much easier. Also a good read.

The Afrika Reich Another book on the English or so, not the true christmas read, but I’m always in for some good alternative history fiction. And fighting fictional Nazis in their African Empire seems to be a worthwile task. Was on the the Economists List of best Fiction of 2011. Slows down during after the first half of the book a little.

Gedanken zu Veränderung §41a GemO BW

Zur Zeit wird von verschiedenen Stellen darüber diskutiert, dass die Gemeindeordnung Baden-Württemberg novelliert werden soll. Dabei hat die neue Landesregierung zum teil wohl auch im Sinn die Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten der Bürger zu stärken.

In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch darüber diskutiert wie der Paragraph der Jugendbeteiligung in der Gemeindeordnung (§41a) regelt  verändert werden könnte.

Bereits jetzt ist Baden-Württemberg mit dieser Regelung vorbildlich und hat eine besserer rechtlicher Rahmen als die meisten Bundesländer. Die breite Strukturen an Jugendgemeinderäten und anderen Jugendbeteiligungsmodellen in unserem Bundesland ist Zeugniss davon. So ist Baden-Wüttemberg das Bundesland mit über 80 Jugendgemeinderäten, einem Jugendgemeinderatsdachverband, zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Beteiligungsformen, projektbezogener Jugendbeteiligung, …
