Youth Red Cross Competition

Last weekend we had the big provincial youth red cros competition. 45 schools from all across Bengkulu Province most of them with 20 students each competed in their knowledge of Red Cross History, First Aid Skills and Disaster Prepardness. Despite that the programm inculded a game show, a talk show to have interaction with the board and information from the sponsors the Bank of Indonesia.

The students are aged 11- 16 years and are member of one of the Yout Red Cross clubs in the schools. German Red Cross runs a school based disaster prepardness programm here in the province and many schools benefit from this as well.

Jerome in Curup, Sebastian in Kota

Gestern habe ich den Jerome nach Curup gebracht, das liegt etwa 3 h Fahrt von Bengkulu in den Bergen. Nicht weil es so weit wäre, aber die Strassen sind kurvig und voller Schlaglöcher, so dass die Fahrt halt länger dauert. DIPECHO Assesment

Diese und die letzte Woche sind wir sehr mit dem DIPECHO Assesment beschäftigt.

DIPECHO ist Disaster Prepardness Porgramm der European Commission Humanitarian Aid Directorat General. Also das Katastrophenschutz Programm des Generaldirektorats für Humanitäre Angelegenheiten der Europäischen Union (siehe dazu auch: EC Regulation N°1257/96 of 20 June 1996, OL L163 of 02.07.1996).

Kaur

der Strand — Fischer kommen von der Arbeit zurück, irgendwo am schönsten Strand von Sumatra

Im Rahmen unseres Assesment für einen Antrag bei ECHO um Fördermittel für ein Katastrophenvorsorge Projekt hier in der Provinz Bengkulu zu bekommen, waren wir gestern und vorgestern in Kaur. Ein kleiner Ort ca 5 h Fahrt über kuvige, Schlaglochgefüllte und teil sehr enge Straßen.

Im Meeting mit dem lokalen Roten Kreuz waren dann aber nur ein Vorstandsmitglied vom Ortsverein da und drei Freiwillige. Wir hatten uns mehr erhofft und bei diesem Ortsverein wird man in der Zukunft sicher noch sehr viel tun müßen.

Nur für alle die uns hier Urlaub machen vorwerfen: wir waren leider nur 30 Minuten am Strand!

Dafür entschädigt dann aber der Strand:

3, 2, 1: Launch School based disaster prepardness

Gestern waren wir beim start des DRK Katatstrophenvorsorgeprogrammes, einmal für die „Community“ und einmal für Schulen. Beide Programme haben jetzt in Nord Bengkulu eine weitere Schule und weitere Dörfer bekommen in denen das DRK die Programme finanziert und zusammen mit dem PMI durchführt.

Am Freitag waren wir dann in einem der Dörfer bei Bengkulu, die aber noch zur Stadt gehören und haben dort das Programm offiziell gelauncht.

Dabei ist es sicher auch immer gut und wichtig das jemand aus Deutschland dabei ist und die Sachen anschaut und auch den Dank entgegen nimmt. Damit haben wir es dann auch in die Lokalzeitung geschafft.

Ich habe das heute mal eingescannt und hier kann man das dann nachlesen.

Bapelkas

From 12^th until the 16^th of December I was at extended First Aid course in Bengkulu at a instituion called Bapelkas. A boardinghouse specially for health related professionals and instituttions.

We were allowed to help a little with teaching and used the actors cards and our presentation about GRC, too.

Interestingly the current advice from PMI Pussat is to not put people into coma position if they have a broken extremity or a spinal injury. Frankly I was shocked by it and its contrary to everything we are taught in Germany. Bandaging and versorgen of broken bones is practised with planks and triangular bandages. A technique in which I’m not good, I have to admit. But at least this lets Xray Radiation through and the material is cheap. Because PMI is not as well equiped as GRC and sometimes stretchers are in short supply.

Today we had the big National Disaster Drill here in Bengkulu. The scenario is as follows: an earthquake has occurred in the ocean before Bengkulu and now the community has to face the after effects of said earthquake and and a tsunami.

We wonderd why they had watercanons in the line up for the simulasi, now we know, they needed it to simulate the tsunami

Yesterday we already had a staff exercise and at the evening a formal reception and today there was the great simulasi. And we must say it was not a real exercise, because the Indos had rehearsed (!) it yesterday afternoon but more a presentation of abilities for the public and government officials.

They even had water-canons to simulate the tsunami, actually the polisi in them was quite nice and we talked a little afterwards. But they made their colleagues wet as well. „National Disaster Drill“ weiterlesen

Bereitschaftsnachmittag

Am Samstag war mal wieder Bereitschaftsnachmittag und das Indonesische Rote Kreuz, Ortsgliederung Bengkulu Stadt hat Evakuierung geübt.

Das geht hier so: zunächst wird ein Teil der Mitglieder als Verletzte und ein anderer Teil als Hysteriker eingeteilt. Die gehen dann circa 30 Meter weiter weg, legen sich hin und spielen krank. Dann kommen die Retter, laufen los und evakuieren die Kranken. Da es nur eine Trage gibt, müssen dann ein paar Leute entweder oder ohne Trage weg getragen werden. Ich habe heute mal eine Technik zum wegtragen gezeigt, die scheinbar nicht bekannt war.
